Who doesn’t love dessert?
Whether it be cake, pie, ice cream or doughnuts, there’s just something so good and delectable about dessert. These sweet treats have the ability to perk up our mood, and we love the freedom you get to exercise when making them. Want to try out that new piping technique? Go ahead. Come up with a new flavour? Give it a go. That’s why we’ve fallen in love with the Topless Baker, AKA Matt Adlard.
Matt is known for sharing his delicious recipes through his blog and his YouTube channel. Nothing is off limits to him and he’s always up for trying out new recipes and testing the limits of his creativity. What’s a plus is that his recipes are normally super easy to follow, so even the most incompetent baker (us) can follow along and succeed.
Since we love him and his channel so much, we decided to share a few of our all-time favourite recipes. Here they are, the 10 times the Topless Baker made our mouths water!
When he got naked
Kicking off our list is this naked topless cake Matt made to celebrate reaching 100,000 subscribers!
While the cake itself is delicious – you can’t go wrong with chocolate and buttercream – the real stars of this recipe are the decorations, which help to make it look exquisite! From the chocolate ganache to the caramel popcorn and meringue, this cake is pretty much as decadent as it gets. Then there’s the gold. Oh, so much gold. It really makes the cake pop. If you ever need to impress someone fancy, this is something that will blow them (and everyone else) away!
When he stole our hearts on Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is all about love, romance… and sweet treats, and Matt has combined all three in this delicious macaroon treat guaranteed to make your loved one(s) swoon!
This recipe might take a wee bit of practice to get just right, as the heart shape of the actual macaroon might be at first difficult to get just right, but the middle is as easy to make as it is delicious. The raspberry and buttercream filling is guaranteed to steal hearts and have your Valentine professing their love for you. Overall, it’s a cute little treat that’s perfect for showing your appreciation for your loved ones.
We think we’re in love. *Insert heart-eye emoji*
When he teamed up with Tom Daley for a delicious cheesecake
Sure, we all know Matt knows his way around a kitchen, but were you aware Olympian Tom Daley also has some baking skills? In this video, the pair take a recipe out of Tom’s cookbook, making hot cheesecake.
It’s a good thing Tom’s never been shy about being topless, because he hits in perfectly with Matt’s brand. In regards to the recipe, this is a super easy (and delicious) one to make, without the use of any added sugar. It’s also filled with a lot of hacks, including the use of a glass to pat down the crumby base. We also love how Matt felt the need to impress Tom with his whisking skills. We would have never hand-whisked egg whites – we’d be unable to use our arms after!
The real question here, Matt, is: when are you going to release your own cookbook?!
When he showed us aesthetics are everything
We all love aesthetically pleasing things. There’s just something so show-stopping about looking at something so nice and perfect. It’s like we can’t fully comprehend how it exists. That’s exactly the reaction you’ll receive from your friends and family when you make them this strawberry mousse bombe.
Made with the use of real strawberries, because you have to make sure to eat your fruits, this recipe is as delicious as it is pleasing to look at. While it is one of the more difficult ones on Matt’s channel (getting the spiral just right might take a few goes), it’s a fun one to tackle and even more delicious to eat once it’s done!
When he made us “aww” with his cute snowman meringues
The holiday season is all about baking, so we’re glad Matt spent a week last December giving us recipe ideas to help wow our guests at our annual Christmas party. Our favourite out of them all? These cute little snowman meringues!
We know meringues aren’t always the easiest treats to make – they crack easily, it’s sometimes hard to make sure the sugar is completely mixed in – but we promise, these ones are as simple as can be! Our favourite part of making this recipe? Making the snowmen! Remember, you have to make sure they all have big booties – that’s the secret to their look. Also, long gone are the days of fabric scarves. Strawberry lace ones are all the rage!
OMG, these are almost too cute to eat! But we did, because we have no self-control around delicious treats.
When he brought the galaxy home
We’ve all seen those colourful bagels being sold in New York City, but, if we’re being honest, we aren’t their biggest fans. They trick you by making you think they’re sugary and sweet, but, in reality, they’re just plain bagels with food colouring… Kind of bland, if you ask us. That’s why we’re glad Matt’s come up with a sweet alternative that’s totally mesmerising.
Who doesn’t love doughnuts? They’re so versatile. Need a quick dessert? Doughnut. Wanting something to eat on the go? Doughnut. See, they’re perfect. However, it isn’t the doughnut that’s the star of this recipe. It’s the glaze, with its beautiful galaxy glaze. Before you start worrying about the difficultly level of this recipe, take a breath and relax. It’s actually so simple! Watch the video and find out for yourself!
See, we told you they were mesmerising. Totally heart-eye emoji worthy.
When he let us know we needed to cool down
Given how warm hot it’s been lately, we’ve been in need of a drink to cool ourselves down with, and Matt has come up with the perfect concoction: a salted chocolate frostino!
We don’t think we’ve seen Matt get so excited about a recipe before – he really loves sea salt flakes, apparently. (In case you were looking for a way to his heart.) From the flakes, to the rich homemade chocolate, this is basically our dream frosted drink. One taste and we were hooked! You can bet this is going to be our go-to all summer long.
Also, we have to thank Matt for giving us our new favourite phrase, “Pow! Hey, salt. Pow, pow!” He really does love sea salt.
When Cookie made a cameo
Is there anything cuter than Matt hanging with his dog, Cookie? We certainly don’t think so!
While dog biscuits might not be for human consumption, we couldn’t not include this video in our list – Cookie is just too cute! If you want to treat your four-legged friend to some homemade treats made with love, this is the recipe for you. We just don’t recommend you try them yourself. Trust us. We might have taken a bite and, we have to say, peanut butter and chicken stock do not mix. Crazy how different dog palettes are to our own!
When he celebrated Earth Day in the sweetest way
We here at TenEighty care about conservation and environmental awareness, so, of course, we love it whenever our fave YouTubers work to spread awareness with their videos. That’s why we simply had to include this Earth Day video from Matt.
This Earth Day cake is pretty cool. (Literally, he stuck it in the fridge.) We have to admit, we were questioning how easy Matt’s homemade icing would be to make. Normally, we’d buy it from the store, but we didn’t want to disappoint him. So we ended up making our own and it wasn’t hard to do at all. Quite easy, actually. The cutting out of the countries, on the other hand? That’s a whole other story.
Matt, we don’t think your countries look that bad – icing isn’t necessarily the easiest medium to work with. They’re way better than the ones we made!
When he set a chocolate fondant on fire!
There isn’t anything we don’t love about chocolate fondant. Not only it is nice and crispy on the outside, but the centre is a delicious dream of ooey gooey goodness. However, have you ever thought about setting it on fire? Well, wonder no more because that’s exactly what Matt did for this #FANCYAF recipe!
We’re not going to lie, we’d always thought making our own chocolate fondant would be rather difficult, but Matt makes it look like a breeze! From the whisking (it’s no wonder he’s got some muscle) to that delicious looking mixture of butter and chocolate, the recipe was done in no time at all! What’s more, we were surprised there was any chocolate mixture to use at all. If it had been us, it would have been eaten before we could have used it.
The pièce de résistance is, of course, when Matt takes out the blowtorch and icing sugar for what is a magically fire show like none other you’ve seen in baking. Truly mesmerising. However, we’ll just have to make sure we have an adult supervising us whilst we make this recipe. Us and fire don’t mix all that well. (And no, we don’t know this from experience…)
Are your mouths watering yet?
Because ours sure are! How is Matt so talented in the kitchen? We can barely make a slice of toast without nearly setting the toaster on fire… And people wonder why we spend so much money on takeout.
