We caught up with singer-songwriter Georgia Box to chat everything from girl power to going viral.
What is the first YouTube video you ever watched?
GEORGIA: “I think the first YouTube video I ever watched was Justin Bieber’s first one, singing Chris Brown’s With You. This is what inspired me when younger to really be persistent in trying to achieve my dreams as a singer and I’m so glad I did because I am now releasing my new single I Don’t Want You Anymore. It’s crazy how things pan out.”
What is the first thing you’d do as YouTube’s CEO?
GEORGIA: “I think I’d help make it easier for people just starting out online to get their music noticed. It’s very hard to grow and get your music heard and I’d love to help all those starting out.”
Which of your song rewrites has been your favourite and why?
GEORGIA: “It has to be my rewrite of Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me. I wrote the song in a couple of hours at home and scheduled it in for upload. I was actually gigging at Pizza Express the night it went up online, and whilst I was singing I had a quick sneaky look on my phone to see how it was going and saw that in two minutes it was nearly at 700 likes! It was crazy! The video has received 30 million views – and counting! – which is amazing. It’s encouraged me to continue with what I’m doing. I love it!”
What values do you try to promote with your videos and music?
GEORGIA: “I like to try and empower people with my music. I think it’s so important that people don’t feel like they have to conform and can be exactly who they want to be! Both females and males. I play football and love wearing tracksuits at the same time as loving dressing up and being glamorous. We can do both and do whatever it is that makes us happy. I also like to give a sense of ‘girl power’ in my music! My new song I Don’t Want You Anymore is all about how women can be strong and independent post-breakup and not be dwelling over it how a lot of stereotypes say! I hope people listen to the track and feel empowered by it!”
What advice can you give aspiring content creators?
GEORGIA: “Don’t give up! It can be a long, hard, and slow process, but the key is to be persistent. I started out by only getting ten likes from my friends and family for months, but I continued to upload weekly because I enjoyed doing it and eventually people started to listen. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. If it is what you want to do then stay motivated, work hard, and you’ll get there!”
Can you recommend a UK YouTuber that we should be watching?
GEORGIA: “I have to say my good friend R-Tizt. He is an incredibly talented rapper and beatboxer. We actually did a ‘boy versus girl’ version of JoJo’s Too Little Too Late that you can find on my YouTube channel.”
Georgia Box’s I Don’t Want You Anymore is available now on iTunes and Spotify.
