You thought Kylie Jenner and Rihanna taking $2 billion off Snapchat’s market value was bad? Try being Facebook right now. This week has been bad, to put it mildly, for the company, which lost $58 billion off its market value because of the recent controversy over usage of users’ data. Elon Musk deleted his company’s Facebook pages for crying out loud!
There’s been a lot of negativity this week, but let’s all take a moment to look to the March For Our Lives protests around gun control in the US over the past few days. It’s inspirational to see the younger generation standing up for things that are important. Also, as a bonus for all musical theatre fans, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt got together to record a beautiful mashup of Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen called Found/Tonight, from which a portion of the profits will go to the fight for better gun control.
This article is a nice pick-me-up for any of you who were too busy over the last week to check what’s been going on in UK YouTube. This is the Round-Up – enjoy!
Like a Dog or a Boat, you tether it | itsamemyleo
How many YouTube videos have you cried at, and how many of those weren’t tears of laughter at Vine compilations? The number dwindles, doesn’t it? OH boy, add another one to the list. Myles Wheeler is back, BABY! The prodigal son – yes, that what’s we’re going with – is back with a feature film-length video that flies by. (In the best possible way.) There’s ups and there’s downs, and there’s something for everyone. We could literally write a dissertation on this video, Harvard referencing, double-spaced, Times New Roman (rules are rules – Jokerman would make it much more fun to read, through), and 10pt font size.
Honestly, this video is a little overwhelming to write about, but in the best way. There’s so much to unpack and talking about it won’t quite do it justice, so we implore you to watch and experience it. What Myles achieves on this platform is everything we want from YouTube – a shining example of what it can be. This should be celebrated with many more views, many more subscribers, awards, and much more. None of that really matters, but quality should always be recognised. Look through the comments on this video and you’ll see other creators absolutely loving this video – Myles is a creator’s creator.
Can you tell we like this video a lot?
MY BESTIE DOES MY ASOS HAUL | ERM, WHAT DID SHE BUY ME?! | Inthefrow
Clothing hauls are as old as YouTube itself, and Victoria Magrath has done one on her channel this week, getting her friend from Chicago to choose outfits for her. There are a lot of red choices, which shows her friend knows her well, and there’s real variation in the outfits that were chosen, all of which looked great for their own specific reasons. We especially liked the striped Bardot top!
Something to take away from this video is the age-old debate about clothes sizing and how it so drastically varies from piece to piece. This is something that can have a very real, negative impact on somone’s mental health. ASOS should definitely think about that going forward.
I TRIED FOLLOWING A CATS BROADWAY MAKE UP TUTORIAL | Amy Lovatt
A recent trend on YouTube is to follow makeup tutorials… to varying degrees of success. But there haven’t been many that are Broadway-related. Amy Lovatt is someone who has done that with previous videos, doing Wicked makeup things. (Geddit?)
This video is a return to that with her inner purrrrrrfection coming through, with Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Cats being the inspiration. With a wig that could generate enough static electricity to kill a small dog, Amy creates a pretty good look, and it’s great to see people actually doing well when following these tutorials.
10 GREATEST FIFA SONGS | THE FIFA Playlist w/ THE MAGIC GANG | SPORF
The FIFA gaming series is known for a lot of things, including realistic graphics, hilarious glitches that result in terrifying images, and their yearly soundtracks. SPORF brought The Magic Gang into their studio to talk their ten favourite songs from all the FIFA games, dating back over 20 years. (Does anyone else who has played them all feel incredible old now?)
Each chosen song has a little clip to remind viewers what it sounds like. Some are only known for being in FIFA and some, like Song 2 by Blur, are somewhat more famous. But each elicits a memory, even if you’ve not heard them in the 15 years since the relevant iteration of the game came out.
A trip down memory lane for all FIFA fanatics, this video has all you need to reminisce about getting childishly annoyed when you lost to your dad repeatedly. We mean, he did take Liverpool. It’s no wonder he won! Probably shouldn’t have punched the TV screen in anger, but what are you going to do now? Good ol’ memories…
Want more? Well, since you asked…
Amena Khan shows us 15 different hijab and hoojab styles. This is a very simple and effective video, with a calming voiceover that works wonderfully well. For those looking for new ways to style their hijabs and hoojabs, it’s so helpful. For those not so well versed in this part of fashion, it’s super helpful to learn about something that isn’t spoken about enough in mainstream media.
If you’re trying to eat in a way that’s both healthy and cost-effective, then look no further than meal preparation. Kiera Rose shows us how to create lunches to avoid a four-pack of Greggs sausage rolls each day. These prepped meals are vegan, as well as animal-friendly – what else could you want?
Have you got skin? Is it sensitive or stressed? Then Lily Pebbles‘s latest video is the one for you. Lily has experienced some skin issues with our recent cold weather, and in this video she goes through her skincare routine in a way that’s easy to follow. This will definitely help out those who don’t quite know what to do to keep their face nice and fresh.
Remember Neopets? Of course you do! Well, it’s still around and going strong. In fact, people like ItsBecky are still loving it. Loving it so much, in fact, she ended up cheating, which resulted in her being banned. This is a great storytime, and a great throwback for anyone who is well versed in Neopets lore.
