From script to final product, nothing is more impressive than YouTube short films.
Although they don’t upload as often, one of our favourite types of creators is YouTube filmmakers. We love seeing what they can craft while collaborating with their friends to make astounding short films. There is a short film out there for everyone and although we’ve already done a Five of the Best about short films, our favourite YouTubers just can’t stop making breathtaking content.
We hope you are in the mood to be taken on a journey as we explore Five More of the Best: Short Films!
PLAYGROUND (2017) | Bertie Gilbert
Bertie Gilbert and Sammy Paul come together – as they have done many times – to produce something beautiful, bright, and endearing. Playground is their latest collaboration and we were left gobsmacked. The film deals with grief in a careful and charming manner, and it truly warms your heart. Trust us, you won’t be the same after watching it. If you’re left wanting more, you can even watch this video explaining the story behind it.
Playground features an incredible selection of child actors, as well as the incredible Chris Kendall. As usual with Bertie and Sammy, the director of photography is Ciaran OBrien and his colour grading gives the film its unique, intense colour palette. We are so excited to see what these guys have coming up next!
The Complex – Short Film (2017) | radwolves
We have eased you in with something funny and heartfelt, but you might not be ready for what’s about to hit. The Complex is Jake Dunn‘s latest short film and we are in love with it. This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about The Complex, but we couldn’t make a collection of the best short films and not include it. The film stars Tiger Cohen-Towell, who is striking as Nina, and Cainaan Skeels, who is just plain terrifying as Alex.
Although the film was written and directed by Jake, it was jointly produced by him, Ewan McIntosh, and Dan Stokes. Another key component to how this film portrays mood so effectively is the soundtrack, which was an original from Jennifer Walton. If you want to be left breathless and struggling with your own sense of reality, we cannot recommend a better choice.
RELIEF (2017) | doyouknowellie
If you, like us, are a fan of Black Mirror, then you will just adore Elisa Spigariol‘s latest short film. This thought-provoking piece truly inspects what it means to be human and what our relationship with artificial intelligence should be. Relief left us thinking long after shutting our screen.
It was produced by Will Garrood, and you will be able to spot YouTuber Pete Bucknall in its wonderful cast alongside Jamie Paul, Freya Taylor, and Danielle Freeman-Grantham, who voices the AI. Writer and director Elisa says that this was a proof-of-concept for a longer piece, and we cannot wait to hopefully see it one day!
Comfort Food | Short Film | SuperSamStuff
Comfort Food is a beautiful short film written and directed by the lovely Sam Saffold-Geri. It’s a film about being together and it bowled us over. Despite there being not a single word spoken during the whole film, we were captivated. In just nine silent minutes, you will be so deeply invested in this couple that you won’t want it to end!
Aside from the wonderful acting by Ant Lightfoot and Antoinette Belle, the effectiveness of this film is also due to Jennifer Walton‘s original score and the sound production in general. It gives the whole film a comforting and enveloping sound, which pulls you right in. We just can’t wait for Sam’s next big project!
Stum (Tongue-Tied) | Gay Short Film | Eilidh
Last, but by no means least, we bring you Stum. Scottish YouTuber Eilidh Gow has produced a lovely LGBTQ+ short film that has truly taken our breath away. This sweet short with stunning visuals fills that aching gap in the entertainment market for LGBTQ+ films that have happy endings. Eilidh worked with YouTuber David Bonecker to create this beautiful piece.
It stars the wonderful Thomas Dart and Lars Gellien, who totally capture our hearts from the get-go. It also features an original score from A Cerulean State, which perfectly complements it. We are so excited to see what else Eilidh and David come up with next!
