2017 sure was a great year for music, wasn’t it?
Not only did many of our fave artists release new music – such as Lorde, Taylor Swift, and Demi Lovato, to name a few – but they also put out some pretty stellar music videos. We’ve always felt that music videos can elevate a song to a whole new level, and we’d have to say our beliefs still hold true after watching the many videos that were released this year.
It appears that music fans in the UK would agree with us, given how much time they spent watching videos! As with previous years, YouTube has analysed the data and come out with the ten music videos the UK was loving most in 2017. The list is pretty varied, but we promise you’ll have heard most, if not all, of the videos listed. Get your listening ears ready!
10. New Rules | Dua Lipa
Kicking off our list at Number Ten is someone we’d consider a national treasure: Dua Lipa. She released her self-titled debut album earlier this year, which features this banger of a track, New Rules.
We’re not going to lie, New Rules was pretty much our soundtrack of the summer. We were dancing to it while walking down the street, singing screaming it in the shower, and secretly making lyric videos for it, so we were super stoked when the official music video was released. From the iconic bathrobe moment that featured in this year’s YouTube Rewind to the cool one-shot take early on, this music video is one of our favourites on this list and we suggest you give it a watch ASAP.
9. Touch | Little Mix
Coming in at Number Nine of the list is The X Factor‘s Little Mix with their music video for Touch.
Is it just us or does anyone else think Little Mix are pretty much angels? We’re always mesmerised whenever we watch their music videos. And their voices? Damn! It’s no secret that we here at TenEighty HQ love a good girl group, as their songs often offer up some pretty good lunchtime sing- (and dance-)offs, so you can bet we had Touch on repeat all year long.
8. Mama ft. William Singe | Jonas Blue
If you’re looking for a song (and music video) that screams summer, then look no further than Jonas Blue‘s Mama. This track is definitely one we can imagine listening to while driving down the coast of California in a convertible, roof down and music blasting – and the video pretty much lends itself to the idea. From the gorgeous blue seas to the fast cars, it’s pretty much our ideal holiday.
Anyone up for a vacation?
7. That’s What I Like | Bruno Mars
You had to know before clicking on this article that Bruno Mars would make an appearance. Even though it was released in 2016, 24K Magic was still making waves this year, showing everyone that Bruno Mars truly is a unique spark in the music industry.
The music video for That’s What I Like further proves Bruno’s uniqueness. While it might appear simple at first, with him standing in front of a white screen, the video quickly turns into a choreographed masterpiece, complete with hand-drawn art and intricate movements that make it one of a kind!
6. Symphony ft. Zara Larsson | Clean Bandit
Coming in a Number Six is a music video that made us reach for the tissues. We don’t know what it is about Clean Bandit, but their music videos always make us feel some pretty strong emotions, and the video for Symphony is no different.
Featuring the vocals of pop queen Zara Larsson, the song is different from what we’ve previously heard from the group, and when paired with the video it creates an impactful piece that’ll leave you feeling things. Also, we love how they opted to feature LGBTQ+ love. It’s not something we often see in music videos, and we hope other artists take note!
5. Wild Thoughts ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller | DJ Khaled
Making his first of two appearances on this list is DJ Khaled with single Wild Thoughts. Featuring vocals from Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, this is definitely one song we couldn’t escape this summer: whether we were listening to the radio or Spotify, or simply browsing the shops, we heard it everywhere.
We thought the video was pretty good, but it went from good to great when we saw the fireworks scene. We don’t care if it makes us childish, we get so giddy whenever we see fireworks! They’re just so cool.
4. Unforgettable ft. Swae Lee | French Montana
We’re not going to lie, Unforgettable by French Montana and Swae Lee is still a track we listen to on the regular. We can’t help it! It’s just so damn catchy and we can’t help but dance whenever it comes on.
Filmed in a Ugandan village, the music video for the track features French Montana, Swae Lee, and villagers dancing to the music, showing off their mad skills and having a great time. We know jealousy isn’t a great trait to have, but we couldn’t help but feel jealous watching them all dance! They have so much rhythm, whereas we can barely move our feet without tripping.
3. I’m the One ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper & Lil Wayne | DJ Khaled
DJ Khaled’s second and final appearance on this list features a whole host of other artists: Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper, and Quavo. It’s a pretty good mix, if you ask us.
This is the music video for I’m the One, a song we’re sure you jammed out to many times this year. We don’t know what it is about the music videos on this list, but they all seem to be filmed in places we want to vacation in. What can we say? We’re a sucker for blue oceans and palm trees.
2. Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee | Luis Fonsi
Is it really any surprise that Despacito would be on this list? Not only did it feature in a good portion of this year’s YouTube Rewind, but it’s also the most viewed video on YouTube! Crazy, right?!
While the video isn’t for the Justin Bieber remix that took over radio, it’s still a pretty fun time. Filled with laughter, dancing, and people having the time of their lives whilst listening to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee do what they do best, it’s a party we wish we had been invited to!
1. Shape of You | Ed Sheeran
Topping off this year’s list is Ed Sheeran‘s Shape Of You, a song that was near impossible to escape from this year. Taking place primarily in a gym, the video features Ed and model Jennie Pegouskie practising their boxing moves and ends with Ed going up against a sumo wrestler. We’re not going to lie, we knew the outcome of this match before the two even started fighting each other. Sorry, Ed, you just don’t seem like the guy who could win against a sumo wrestler. We still love you, though.
Side note: does anyone else still think of the Teletubbies/Shape Of You mashup clip whenever this song comes on the radio?
