Are you prepared for Summer in the City 2017?
The UK’s largest YouTube gathering is only days away and we can already feel the excitement beginning to build. Whether you’re a creator, a viewer, or simply someone who wants to learn more about online video, Summer in the City is the place you’ll want to be this coming weekend. From panels to live performances, meet-and-greets to fairground rides, this year’s gathering is set to be the best one yet, so here are 11 things you simply won’t want to miss!
So You Want to be an Online Journalist? panel
Here at TenEighty HQ, we get tons of messages from budding journalists and writers regarding how to get started in online journalism, and if you’re like them you probably have a lot of questions as well. Well, look no further than this year’s Creator Day (4 August), where ourselves and some industry pros will be filling you in on the tips and tricks you need in order to become the next big thing in online journalism.
The panel starts at 5pm on in Panel Room B, so be sure to stop by! We’ve given you all the info you need, so there’s really no reason why we shouldn’t see your darling faces.
Baking With Layton Live!
Think Baking With Layton is one of YouTube’s best baking series? Just wait until you see it live on stage!
You read right: Daniel J. Layton will be taking his Baking With Layton series live for a one-of-a-kind live show experience at this year’s Summer in the City. Set to occur in the new Lifestyle Zone on 5 August, the show will feature Dan baking many a treat with his YouTube besties.
We can already smell the pastries.
Creators for Change panel
One of the new panels occurring this year will be the Creators for Change panel, which comes on the heels of the launch of the Creators for Change programme. The initiative aims to showcase how online creators are tackling social issues and injustice through their channels, and the panel will be doing much of the same. Stop by Panel Room B on 5 August to hear Myles Dyer, Taha Khan, Sirma Doga, and Nadir Nahdi discuss how they’re using YouTube to make a difference.
The Penguin Books stall
A fellow bookworm? Then be sure to stop by the Penguin Books stall while at SitC this weekend! The publishers behind Dodie Clark‘s Secrets for the Mad, Connie Glynn‘s Rosewood Chronicles, and Bethany Mota‘s Make Your Mind Up will be representing at this year’s event, selling books, postcards, and super adorable tote bags!
Filmmaking panel
Featuring the likes of Sammy Paul, Luke Cutforth, Hazel Hayes, Bertie Gilbert, Melanie Murphy, PJ Liguori, and Sam Saffold-Geri, this year’s Filmmaking panel is one you simply can’t afford to miss! Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker looking for advice, or are simply curious about what goes on behind the scenes of your favourite short films, this panel is bound to be one the weekend’s best! Be sure to head to Panel Room A by midday to snag a seat.
McFlurry van
Like ice cream and free Wi-Fi? Trick question, of course you do! That’s why you have to stop by the McDonald’s McFlurry Van this weekend! Grab a group of friends and strike a pose at the van’s 180-degree photo booth to snag a free McFlurry, and a gif of your SitC shenanigans!
Join McDonald’s this weekend in saying #HelloGoodTimes!
Summer in the City Awards 2017
Last year’s inaugural Summer in the City Awards were definitely a highlight of last year’s event, and the organisers are bringing it back for a second year! With fan-nominated categories like Vlogger of the Year and Creator Series of the Year, this year’s ceremony is sure to be filled with lots of surprises and laughs.
And guess what: TenEighty’s on this year’s judging panel! So be sure to join us on 6 August for the second annual SitC Awards and let’s celebrate the best of the best within the UK YouTube community!
Dodgems
Since 2015, SitC has also doubled as an indoor fairground, with rides and dodgems scattered throughout the ExCeL centre. So be sure to grab a few friends, buy some tokens, and have some fun! Just be sure to save some money for the YouTuber merch you’ll undoubtedly be buying.
#YouTubeHonestyHour panel
2016’s #YouTubeHonestyHour panel was definitely one for the books and this year’s will be no different. Unlike other panels where the conversation is led by a moderator, the audience takes the helm with this one and asks panellists for their opinions on anything YouTube-related – and when we say anything, we mean anything. Last year’s discussion included ghostwriting, YouTuber books, and drama channels, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what this year’s panellists will be talking about.
And with a lineup including Tom Ridgewell, Liam Dryden, Alex Wassabi, Yousef Erakat, Gabbie Hanna, and Aaron Burriss, you can guarantee NOTHING will be off-limits!
Dodie Clark’s Main Stage performance
Dodie Clark’s performance at Summer in the City 2016 was definitely a highlight for many, so of course this year’s will be as well. With a new EP on the way and an ever-growing fanbase, you can guarantee Dodie’s show will be one of the weekend’s best. Who knows, maybe she’ll even treat us to a few new tracks?!
Dodie is set to hit the stage 6 August at 8.20pm, so be sure to be at the Main Stage early in order to nab a good spot. This is one performance you won’t want to miss!
The TenEighty stand
An obvious choice, we know, but you simply won’t want to miss stopping by our stand whilst exploring the ExCeL. Not only will we be selling physical copies of our magazine (including the new issue featuring Joe Sugg), but posters as well!
We’ll also be hosting a Meet the Editors session on 4 August from 2.30pm-3.30pm for anyone who would like to see our smiling faces, introduce themselves, or learn more about joining the TenEighty team! So we sure to stop by – we can’t wait to meet you all!
So there you have it…
A few of the many things you won’t want to miss at this year’s Summer in the City! If you’re like us, then this list has gotten you even more pumped for the weekend! Unable to attend? Don’t worry, we’ll be spending the weekend recapping all the panels and performances, as well as interviewing a few of your faves, so it’ll be like you’re actually there!
