From books to products, and radio shows to appearances on the West End, YouTubers are taking the mainstream – and the world – by storm.
Over the past few years, YouTube has increasingly become a part of mainstream media, as more and more creators have made it into the public eye, and whilst this has caused some friction with the initial inability of mainstream media to really get the platform, there were plenty of places willing to give opportunities to our faves. The result? The world has become even more hooked on YouTubers than we are, and that’s hard to do!
Here are 11 times YouTubers took the mainstream by storm!
The Dan and Phil Show
Way back in November 2012 (how was it five years ago?!), Dan Howell and Phil Lester announced they would be presenting their very own show on BBC Radio 1, for which they won a Sony Golden Headphone award. The Dan and Phil Show was a spiritual successor to the original Request Show and was the result of the two previously hosting one-off shows on the station.
Although now discontinued, along with its replacement The Internet Takeover, the show introduced the world of YouTube to a wider audience. Sunday nights haven’t been the same since! *cry*
Zoella Beauty
Even if you only have a vague idea of what YouTube is beyond cat videos and people falling off things, chances are you’ve heard of Zoe Sugg. Over the past few years, Zoe has gone from strength to strength with her videos, her highly successful book series, and her lifestyle products, which can be found in both Boots and Superdrug. Featuring everything from bath products to perfume, Zoe’s lifestyle line has been leaving the world both looking and smelling great since its launch!
As a result of her success both on and off YouTube, Zoe was featured as a contestant on Comic Relief’s Great British Bake Off and received her very own waxwork at Madame Tussauds!
Tanya Burr’s fashion industry takeover
Another breakout star into the fashion and beauty world is the ever-charming Tanya Burr.
Of course, we all know her from her makeup and cooking vlogs, but the mainstream world knows her for her Superdrug cosmetics range, her two non-fiction books, as a seasonal attendee of London Fashion Week, and for being on the front of Glamour UK. Honestly, can we just live her life, please?
Marcus Butler
Is there anyone cooler than Marcus Butler? He’s walked the runway for Dolce & Gabbana, featured on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, been a contestant on Release the Hounds with Alfie Deyes and Joe Sugg, and even starred on Celebrity MasterChef. Oh, and did we mention he wrote a book, Hello Life?
Every time we check his Instagram (which is only once a day, we promise), we get some serious life and selfie envy.
Rose and Rosie’s Exposed Tour
Where there’s a Rose Dix, there’s a Rosie Spaughton, and where there’s a Rosie – well, you get the idea. Our favourite married couple of YouTube have seriously broken out into the mainstream recently as a result of their content, especially after winning the Celebrity Rising Star award at the 2016 British LGBT Awards. The award fuelled tons of hype around the duo’s Exposed tour, which saw them travelling around the UK for a week, putting on shows at the likes of O2 Shepherd’s Bush and O2 Institute.
The tour really saw Rose and Rosie in their element and it definitely launched the pair into the eyes of many!
Louise Pentland’s Clothing Line
Louise Pentland has added more than a sprinkle of happiness to our lives over the last few years. Engaging to both teenagers and their parents alike, Louise has arguably one of the widest ranging audiences on YouTube. Recently, her channel has become more grown up, and we’re loving it!
Like a true entrepreneur, Louise has embarked on everything from books to clothing ranges, and it’s that clothing range that’s had us shook for years! Louise’s elegant and fashion-forward taste has resulted in many a chic look, and we’re looking forward to seeing the styles she releases in the future!
Emma Blackery’s Music Career
It’s no secret that we were at TenEighty are OBSESSED with Emma Blackery‘s latest EP Magnetised, especially after we got to see her perform it live on her recent UK tour. However, we knew long before its release that Emma was destined for music stardom. When her second EP Distance reached Number One on the iTunes Rock Charts within a week of its release, we knew the mainstream loved Emma just as much as we did! And guess what? Considering how well Magnetised has done, they still do!
Dodie Clark’s Intertwined
Armed with a ukulele and her sister Hedy, Dodie Clark made us fall in love with her and her early videos. And now, the whole world is head over heels for her too! Her first EP Intertwined reached 35 on the iTunes charts and the release even warranted her getting her very own Vevo channel!
Psst, did you hear she’s even about to publish an autobiography? As an ancient proverb once said: “You can never have enough Dodie in your life.”
Carrie Hope Fletcher’s West End Takeover
Carrie Hope Fletcher‘s first vlogs and music charmed us from the onset, and now she’s a West End star! Her performance as Eponine in Les Misérables made her the only British actress to play as both the character’s young and older incarnations. Since then, she’s been a part of The War of the Worlds and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and is currently starring as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family.
And if you already thought she had a packed schedule, she’s also found time to write two novels and one autobiographical book. Can we have a dose of her productivity, please?
Savannah Brown’s Poetry Book
Graffiti was one of our favourite books of 2016 and it appears the community on Goodreads certainly agreed when they voted it as the runner up to the site’s Poetry Choice award. Now, the book is on its second edition and Savannah Brown has revealed that she’s currently working on a novel, which we’re super excited for!
Grace Victory’s Work with the BBC
Last, but certainly not least, Grace Victory‘s work with BBC Three has propelled her into the mainstream.
Grace has presented two documentaries so far – Clean Eating’s Dirty Secrets and The Cost of Cute: The Darker Side of the Puppy Trade – which cover the likes of nutrition and the illegal puppy trade, topics that are important to her. Grace’s informative and bubbly personality make her the perfect documentary host.
Currently, she is in talks for a third film. We can’t see what topic she’ll cover next!
So there you have it…
11 times YouTubers took the mainstream by storm! We’re glad to see that the real world is starting to accept the talents of those we’ve loved watching for years. What’s next for our faves? Who knows! But what we do know is that they’ll continue to show the world that YouTubers are more than simply people talking to a camera.
