Good morning, good moooooorning! It’s great to stay up late!
That is, if you haven’t got four hours of lectures to sit through and approximately five chapters of The Picture of Dorian Gray to suddenly acquire knowledge of on this lovely Monday. And no, unfortunately, your professor wouldn’t take too kindly to you emulating your best Gene Kelly and breaking out into a rousing tap-dance to lift your spirits. How horribly rude of them.
Luckily for you, this week’s Round-Up should do just the trick to perk you up during your lunch break! So, without further ado…
The Complex – Short Film Trailer (2017) | radwolves
You’re for sure going to want to keep the lights on when you watch this one.
First on our list is Jake Dunn‘s newest trailer, for his upcoming short film The Complex, and it looks like we’re going to need a buddy to watch with us… Err, you know, to bounce ideas off each other while watching the film… Definitely not to tell us what’s happening on the screen as we cower with our head under the duvet, that’s for sure.
Cowardice aside, the colours and acting chops of the cast already have us pretty hyped. And that villain? *shiver* No good guy is EVER filmed through the peephole of an apartment door.
If Wonder Woman Fails | Jack Howard
Not particularly intrigued by the new Wonder Woman film? It might be time to pay attention – Jack Howard is here to shed light on the implications of the movie’s success or failure.
It’s no secret that Hollywood is – and has been – hurting for females in lead creative roles, both on screen and in the writers’ rooms, and as one of the first superhero films with a female lead, Jack notes just how much weight Wonder Woman has on its shoulders. It’s part of a larger trend in trying to hastily remedy the lack of gender diversity in Hollywood, as Jack discusses, and while he’s quick to acknowledge his personal privilege regarding the subject, we’re glad to have even more voices building up his conversation.
And Hollywood, don’t think we don’t have a list of stellar British female talent with the potential to take the world by storm ready to be copied and sent to every production company in Los Angeles!
| Waves | a short film by ywilde | yasmine wilde
If you haven’t already been introduced to the ethereal Yasmine Wilde through her series of artfully nostalgic Vines (we’re still grieving over its loss, tbh), it’s our pleasure to do so now! However, her newest work is a bit longer than six seconds – by well over four minutes.
Mental illnesses, though uniform to a degree, are deeply personal, subjective experiences holding their own unique impacts on the lives of those who live with them. Yasmine has worked to create a film that captures that aspect entirely. A collaborative short film, Waves gives voice to the numerous ways depression is felt and experienced, putting prose and artistic visuals to the illnesses’ impact. With a diverse cast and an empathetic, empowering message, it’s no wonder the reception to Yasmine’s film has been so warm.
It’s Not You | Francesca Georgiou
The poetess that stole our heart this week spoke of time and its confines so eloquently that we HAD to press replay at least three times to make sure we had soaked up every drop of wisdom she put forth.
The girl responsible is none other than Francesca Georgiou. Everything about this video screams poignancy, from the deliberate articulation within her delivery to Francesca’s alliterative prose driving home hard-hitting sentiments. We’re so enamoured that our list of compliments has been reduced to incoherent keyboard smashing. And we’re supposed to be good with words!
THE ULTIMATE SINGAPORE BATTLE | SORTEDfood
Last night, we watched a mermaid with the head of a lion cook us up a handful of chicken skewers and a beautifully creamy chicken satay sauce. Nope, we promise we weren’t hallucinating, just ask the guys of the SORTEDfood kitchen!
Jamie Spafford, Barry Taylor, and Mike Huttlestone have brought their A-game to this week’s food battle, creating a host of Singapore-inspired dishes that have us nearly dribbling at our laptop screens. If you aren’t following along with these recipes, then you’ll be looking up how to get Mike’s stylish clamshell top, just in time for the summer months. Singa-phwoarrr, indeed!
You’ve never known us to stick to just five…
Starring in one of our favourite cheeky li’l collabs this week are Dodie Clark and Tessa Violet, making a lovely duet out of Tessa’s song Words Ain’t Enough. If you weren’t already heart-eyes for this pair, this video will do the trick.
Madeleine Drury is giving us serious travel envy as she recounts her journey to Amsterdam through a series of insightful postcards addressed to herself.
It’s the party you didn’t know you needed an invite to until now, only this time you won’t need to sneak out the window to attend! Sex-positive pals Melanie Murphy, Hannah Witton, and Calum McSwiggan tackle the issue of orgasms in the debut episode of Sexual Liberation Party.
What do you get when you combine two friends, intelligent discussion, and a healthy dose of existential dread? Ah yes, it’s the latest episode of Daniel J. Layton’s Effortless Chat series that is swiftly finding a spot in our hearts, this time ‘round starring Rosianna Halse Rojas.
