Hello, Monday. It’s us.
Yes, we’re here again. Bleary-eyed, but ready to take on the week with a resounding enthusiasm. However, we need our strength to prepare ourselves for the days ahead, and what better than to devour a selection of finely curated YouTube content by yours truly? Basically, it’s a nutritious breakfast filled with music, comedy, thoughtful discussion… those are the segments of the food pyramid, right?
No? Well, they should be!
Intertwined | dodieVEVO
If someone had said two weeks ago that Dodie Clark‘s Intertwined brought to mind imagery of flaming dollhouses, we may have been slightly concerned. Now, it’s all we talk about.
Dodie Clark’s new music video for her EP’s title track, Intertwined, is a beautiful example of cinematic counterpoint. The song ostensibly sounds like any old love song, supported by a guitar plucking soft, waltz-like triplets. However, a closer look at the lyrics and their accompanying visuals tells quite a different story: two lovers whose fates are so intertwined that they bring about each other’s dark demise.
While we have Dodie to thank for the brilliant lyrics, we also have to give a healthy dose of applause to director Sammy Paul, whose work we are consistently floored by.
Women in Star Wars | ChewingSand
Why nerd out about Star Wars and female role models separately when you could do both at the same time AND be accompanied by Hazel Hayes? Personally, we can’t imagine a more thrilling evening, unless Gareth Edwards was there himself! Oh, wait…
This week, Hazel and the Rogue One director had a quick chat about the evolving role of women in the Star Wars franchise, spanning from how the characters themselves are written to the perception of what makes a modern female character “strong”. Not only does Hazel conduct the interview with the ease and poise of a seasoned pro, she also engages in an increasingly important dialogue: diversity in cinema.
Comfort Food | Short Film | SuperSamStuff
Sam Saffold-Geri’s newest short film, which features the talents of Ant Lightfoot and Antoinette Belle, is truly a piece of art, using cinematography and sound design to create a stunningly emotional narrative. We know it’s all we’ve been able to taco ‘bout this week (yep, that’s right — FOOD puns are our angle for this one).
An adorable pear meet in a coffee shop, but doughnut be fooled: this isn’t just a cheesy meat-cute with a happy ending. It’s a story told peach by peach through small moments the couple share. Even dough the characters never speak a single word, they still leave us feeling like we’re a pizza the story and wanting s’more, even past the end scene.
Okay, we promise to stop before you beet us up.
Body Image and Insecurity – VEDA 4 | Daniel J. Layton
Guess who’s taken up VEDA (along with a smashing new blog format): it’s the lovely Daniel J. Layton, this week offering some insight to those of us who may struggle with body image.
We all face our own unique insecurities when it comes to our bodies, and YouTube is a place where strategies to combat unhealthy body image aren’t exactly few and far between. However, Dan brings up an important consideration: if these proposed solutions to our insecurities involve giving up things we love, are they solutions at all? Does a proper solution even exist?
We know we’re not doing Dan’s conclusions (or his comedic anecdotes) justice, so check out his video and leave him some love.
Birthday Baking with my Mum! | LukeIsNotSexy
We’re suckers for parental bonding time (and chocolate in any form), so when Luke Cutforth released a video this week baking a vegan chocolate cake with his mum, we were all over it.
Were we slightly skeptical about throwing avocados into a recipe for chocolate cake? Maybe. Are we now contemplating adding avocados to every recipe ever? Also maybe. We mean, how are we supposed to get avocados off our minds when Luke’s mum’s innovative new rendition of The Guacamole Song has been playing in our minds non-stop?
Still craving more? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered…
Dean Dobbs gave us a tour of his artistic process, speckled with comedic commentary, and introduces us to the lovely slime ghoul, Shannon. She’s either your new best friend or the newest entrant into your nightmares.
Are you looking to diversify your subscription feed? Look no further than Lucy Moon’s newest video, where she recommends her favourite BAME/PoC creators. We’ve already been creeping on their content! *insert shifty-eyes emoji*
Here at TenEighty, we’re always a fan of pretty words, and this week Néve McNally has blessed with several in the form of Socket, a poem depicting fluctuating self-worth and love lost.
The wash of blue light, the shabby-chic assortment of knick-knacks arranged on the mantle and the single glass of white wine balanced on the table? The aesthetic of Oliver Banks’s cover of Lorde’s Liability is almost as fabulous as his effortlessly cool vocals — perfect easy listening for a quiet night in.
