Prepare to enter a world where being peculiar is as normal as can be.
Just how peculiar, you ask? Peculiar enough to leave you questioning your surroundings. In celebration of the digital HD release of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, photog extraordinare Linda Blacker took it upon herself to transform a handful of our favourite YouTubers into some of the most peculiar characters around, from a girl who is quite literally as light as air to a boy whose arrogance can sometimes get the better of him. The result? A photoshoot that will have you questioning what exactly you’re seeing.
In true TenEighty fashion, we had to highlight Linda’s work and the transformation each YouTuber made. So prepare for a journey to a Home you might find far more peculiar than you initially believed it to be.
Emma Bloom – Carrie Hope Fletcher
“I have worked with Carrie a fair few times now [and] she never disappoints,” says Linda. “Her gentle persona fits so nicely with the character Emma Bloom – it was the perfect match!”
Able to levitate and manipulate the air around her, Emma Bloom is one of the most unique characters in the Miss Peregrine universe. To keep her grounded, she wears a pair of badass boots, which is good because we wouldn’t want her floating away into the unknown – no sir.
“Emma literally floats, but I always feel like my mind is in the clouds, constantly thinking about mad ideas for books and writing,” says Carrie. “She’s also a very certain character, not only of herself, but [of] the world around her. That’s not something I am, but I definitely aspire to be more certain about myself and life in general.”
Emma is as kind and gentle as can be, so of course there’s no one better to portray her than the internet’s honorary big sister herself! Carrie is loyal and kindhearted, which perfectly mirrors Emma’s actions as she stands by Jacob’s side throughout the film. In fact, they spend so much time together that their relationship ends up developing into something that surpasses a mere friendship…
It’s not a coincidence that Pete Bucknall was chosen to portray Jake.
Jacob Portman – Pete Bucknall
“I actually thought of Pete as Jake at exactly the same time I thought of Carrie as Emma,” explains Linda. “I thought it would be such a beautiful pairing!”
Jacob Portman is one of the movie’s two main protagonists and he visits the Home for Peculiar Children following the death of his grandfather, who’d told him many stories about it over the years. However, Jacob spent the majority of his childhood believing these tales to be fake, so imagine his surprise when he found out they were real!
Throughout his life, Jacob was seen as a bit of an outcast, something Pete says he can relate to: “I have definitely felt like an outcast for some portions of my life, and I’ve definitely ended up with some other peculiar people as friends!”
To be honest, we wouldn’t have you any other way, Pete! From your unique sense of humour to your above and beyond personality, you’ve mastered the art of being yourself and we love you for it!
Miss Peregrine – Hazel Hayes
“I think Hazel was quite an obvious choice for Miss Peregrine,” explains Linda. “I have worked with Hazel before and she very comfortably falls and moulds into the roles of powerful women. That, and I knew she would work a black and blue wig!”
To be honest, we couldn’t think of anyone better to portray Miss Peregrine, the Ymbryne with the ability to control time and turn into a bird. Miss Peregrine is the matriarch of the Home and is willing to do anything to protect her children, which totally mirrors Hazel’s nature. Just one look at her Twitter proves so!
“I’d like to think I’m as assertive as Miss P while still being kind,” says Hazel. “And I definitely can be very protective of the people closest to me!”
And you know what, Linda was right! Hazel totally rocked that wig.
Enoch O’Connor – Doug Armstrong
“[Doug] really captured the character’s arrogant attitude in his images, and somehow still managed to look good whilst holding bloody hearts in jars!” Raves Linda.
Doug Armstrong, arrogant? Forgive us if we find that hard to believe! But Linda’s right, he does a great job at portraying it! Enoch O’Connor has the power to animate the dead for a short amount of time (which is something we’re glad we’re unable to do!) and as a result has developed quite an attitude. However, while he might be a tad bit arrogant at times, he does have some redeeming qualities, which Doug connects with:
“Enoch is determined in his work and doesn’t give up easily, some traits I like to think I share.”
To our surprise, Doug would actually like to have Enoch’s powers. However, don’t think too poorly of it – he wants them for purely innocent means: “Maybe I’d feel less guilty for killing all my house plants if I could bring them back to life…”
Olive Abroholos Elephanta – Lucy Moon
“Lucy and Olive are a brilliant match,” explains Linda. “Lucy literally transformed into Olive seamlessly and I am so pleased with how her character photos came out!”
Ever wondered what it would be like to have power over fire? Well, Lucy Moon got to experience it for the day when she was turned into Olive Abroholos Elephanta, the girl with pyrokinesis.
Contrary to her ability, for which she has to wear rubber gloves to prevent her from accidentally setting things on fire, Olive is quiet and kind-natured. Her vibrant red hair mirrors her internal fire, and it’s something Lucy actually liked the most about portraying the character:
“I loved Olive’s hair,” she says. “It was the same colour and style as my mum’s when she was growing up. Everyone kept saying it suited me really well!”
Barron – Adam Waithe
“Barron is probably my favourite character,” says Linda. “He is a wonderful villain, but I also feel there is an air of comedy about him in some scenes of the movie. Although Adam is clearly not a villain himself, he does has a great sense of humour and is super entertaining.”
Question: what would you say if we invited you on a journey that included us travelling together through different time periods in order to eat the eyes of peculiars? It doesn’t sound fun, does it? In fact, it sounds down-right creepy, which is why Barron is one of the most evil villains we’ve encountered recently.
While Adam might not be a villain himself, what with his humorous ways and general nice-guy persona, we totally think he managed to pull off his portrayal of the character perfectly! We mean, look at his eyes – if those things don’t give you nightmares, then we don’t know what will! And those teeth… We’re getting the creeps just looking at him!
The Twins – Niki and Sammy Albon
“Despite not seeing their faces, [Niki and Sammy] really did play the twins wonderfully, mirroring each other perfectly and adopting the exact same body language and posing of the characters,” says Linda.
Looking for even more creepiness? Look no further than The Twins! Decked head to toe in white, with facial features painted in black, they look like the type of creatures you’d expect to meet in your nightmares. However, don’t let their looks deceive you. The Twins are actually quite shy and are very affectionate toward each other, allowing their bond to stay strong. And whilst Niki and Sammy might not necessarily be shy, they do share a bond that’s stronger than ever!
How else do they relate to The Twins? Well, as they put it, “We like to think we’re always there to save the day (no spoilers) and be creepy, and look bad in white. But mainly save the day (as human marshmallows).”
We’d have to agree.
Peculiar, indeed.
It’s safe to say that all the YouTubers involved in the shoot portrayed their characters well. So well in fact, we found ourselves forgetting that they’re actually YouTubers and not the peculiar children themselves!
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is out now on digital HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
