You did it! You’ve made your way through the first month of 2017!
Well, nearly. Two more days, you can do it! A mere 48 hours. And we’re not suggesting that you spend at least half of those waking hours scrolling through your subscription feed, but if you do find that to be your preferred method of avoiding real-life responsibilities, we’ve got you started with approximately .4298* hours of hand-picked content.
*May or may not be shoddy maths. We’re writers, not mathematicians!
BookTubers Writing Books? | Ariel Bissett
Kicking things off this week is one of our favourite bookish ladies discussing one of the most popular pairings on the platform: YouTubers and books.
Ariel Bissett brings up an interesting addition to the topic: what about the implications of BookTubers publishing books? Is it possible to separate a creator’s online identity from their identity as an author? And is utilising your platform ‘cheating’ your way into publishing?
She argues that writing a book and being published is a beautiful feat, regardless of how you got there. Prior success on a different platform shouldn’t invalidate that fact. What do you think? Hit that play button and get back to us!
THE ONLY MAKEUP PRODUCTS YOU NEED! | Lily Pebbles
If you weren’t already looking to Lily Pebbles for advice on makeup / career paths / your entire life, you will be now.
In her latest video, Lily puts together the minimalist makeup capsule of our dreams. It’s the lovechild of a chatty tutorial and a cleverly edited product showcase, complete with handwritten animations (seriously, you watch a video with them flashing across the screen and try not to fall in love!).
With her sophisticated advice and conversational tone, you’ll feel like you’re getting a one-on-one with your older sister – minus the sibling teasing, of course.
Why YouTube Channels Die | Evan Edinger
We all have those channels – you know, the ones we used to watch religiously, but we now find ourselves drifting from like old friends?
Evan Edinger captures the topic of channel death in a candid conversation this week, touching on the reasons that some flourish over time while others fade. It all falls back on those principles that make YouTube a platform worth using: it encourages people to constantly be creating innovative and groundbreaking content, all while maintaining the passion and authenticity viewers crave. After all, what’s the point of a good video if you don’t believe in what you’re saying?
We’re sure this is only the tip of the iceberg for this conversation, and can’t wait to see more creators add in their two cents. Thanks for getting us started, Evan!
The Fools Who Dream | LA LA LAND | ChewingSand
Next up is the ever-radiant Hazel Hayes, who has landed herself on this week’s list with a rather dreamy La La Land cover. Emma Stone who?
It’s pretty clear that all of your YouTube faves have been captivated by this film, even now weeks after the initial screenings, and it’s no surprise as to why. This movie is a romantic ode to creatives, their place in the world, and the leaps they take while searching for meaning and fulfilment.
The video is hardly three minutes long, but plays almost like a stream of consciousness that showcases Hazel’s singing AND acting chops. Stunning, all around. We’ll try not to ruin it by belting along.
All About Gi | Dear Carrie | Tom Fletcher
You may need to break out the tissues for this last one, guys.
We thought it was impossible for Tom Fletcher to top his wedding speech, but here he is, making every significant other you’ve ever had look bad once again. This time around, he’s celebrating Giovanna Fletcher’s birthday with a video filled with a heartfelt retelling of the couple’s history throughout the years — with some spectacular throwback pictures to boot.
We don’t have nearly as many cute pictures with you as Tom does, Gi, but all of us at TenEighty HQ are wishing you a very happy birthday!
More, you say? You don’t even need to ask…
Sarah Close’s latest cover of Ed Sheeran’s new single is full of jazzy synth patches and has us jamming at our desks. Seriously, the newest YouTube challenge should involve listening to it without bobbing your head to the beat! We’ve yet to succeed.
Ed Sheeran’s voice may leave us in awe, but his trivia skills are significantly less astonishing. Check him out in Caspar Lee’s latest Brain Freeze Challenge, and maybe send Caspar a large, winter coat while you’re at it. He might need it!
Nothing like starting your week off by second-guessing your entire understanding of the concept of time! Let Charlie McDonnell (along with guest stars Lex Croucher and Sam Saffold-Geri) blow your mind in his newest episode of Fun Science.
