It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
And no, we’re not talking about Christmas (even though it’s a pretty awesome holiday). We’re talking about YouTube Rewind 2016, the ultimate summary of the awesome creators and viral trends that made waves in the online world over the past year. It’s an annual YouTube tradition, and one that always gets us a bit choked up. What? We’re sentimental like that.
We here at TenEighty are absolutely in love with this year’s version, so of course we had to round up our favourite moments from the seven-minute video. Just a heads up, there are a lot.
The Rock + a bum bag = something we didn’t know we wanted, but are glad it happened
Could there have been a better way to kick off Rewind 2016 than with The Rock wearing what we consider to be a super fashionable bum bag? Of course not! And no, we’re not being sarcastic. We’re actually major fans of bum bags (they’re so convenient!) and of The Rock, who also happens to be a YouTuber on top of the million other things he’s got going on! He’s honestly #goals.
Dan and Phil’s aesthetic
As if Dan Howell and Phil Lester weren’t already cute enough, the two donned the ultimate lumberjack/construction site aesthetic, leaving us pretty much looking exactly like the heart-eyes emoji.
…What do you mean we’re too obsessed? Is that even possible?
Has anyone actually managed to catch a Ditto yet?
Wow, thanks YouTube for reminding us that we’re still not the Pokémon masters we had hoped to be when Pokémon GO was first released…
TomSka is living the dream
Show of hands: just how many of you wish you could crush those weird, rainbow hipster donuts under heavy machinery that we totally know the name of… *shifty eyes*
What? We’re journalists, not construction workers. But those random object crushing videos are so oddly satisfying.
Isn’t the mannequin challenge similar to that game we all used to play in primary school?
You know, the one where you walk around the classroom, but when your teacher yells “freeze” you all have to stop in place and be as still as you can. We were total aces at that; champs every time!
Who knew spin cycles could look so cool?
Like spin cycling, but don’t like how your arms are left out of the workout? We suggest you start dabbing while you spin, just as Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal have so kindly shown us.
Feel the burn!
You okay, Alfie?
Don’t worry, Aflie Deyes fans. We’re told he was not harmed during the filming of this scene. Nor was Humza Arshad, who appears to be getting crushed. Eek.
*holds breath*
We can’t even begin to explain to you how stressed we felt when that water bottle was thrown into the air. What if the cap wasn’t screwed on tight enough and water spilt everywhere? What if it didn’t land properly and fell on the floor? Seriously, we didn’t think the water bottle challenge would be so intense!
RIP to all those we lost in 2016
We applaud YouTube for paying homage to those the entertainment world lost in 2016. We think Alex Wassabi did a pretty good job of portraying David Bowie.
More familiar faces!
We love spotting our favourites in YouTube Rewind. Although we’re not sure how we feel about trusting Deji Olatunji with heavy machinery. That said, LDShadowLady doesn’t seem too bothered. What babes.
Sing it out!
Being on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke is an absolute dream of ours! Hey Connor Franta and Jenn McAllister, want to hook us up with a spot?
And there you have it: YouTube Rewind 2016 all wrapped up in a nice cosy list.
Get it? Wrapped. Because it’s almost Christmas. We’re just TOO funny sometimes. But enough about us, what were your favourite moments from this year’s Rewind? Be sure to tweet us and let us know! If you haven’t seen our full recap then clicky here for all your YouTube Rewind 2016 needs.
And in case you haven’t seen it yet (a.k.a. if you’ve been living under a rock), here’s the full video:
