Linda Blacker’s new photo series depicts YouTubers Carrie Hope Fletcher, Rose Dix, Rosie Spaughton. and Carly Rowena in the style of pin-up paintings.
While discussing what inspired her to create the Modern Woman – YouTuber Vintage series, particularly in her chosen style, Linda tells TenEighty that she finds pin-up paintings “visually stunning”.
She adds: “I began to wonder how different life would have been for women in the 1940s and 1950s. It cannot be denied that career opportunities have blossomed for women in the UK since the Fifties, and I wanted to explore that further.”
Linda emphasises that she wanted to include a wide range of women on YouTube in her series and that “the women I chose all stood out to me in regards to what they do on- and off-platform.
“From Carrie Fletcher, a successful author, West End actress, and musician, to Rose and Rosie, an award-winning LGBT duo, raising awareness for the LGBT community as well as being successful women in comedy.”
The photo series also features Zoe London, Hannah Witton, and Grace Victory.
When asked what she enjoyed most about creating the series, Linda says: “I had so much fun styling and designing each look, from sourcing the clothing, which came from an amazing vintage-themed company called Collectif, to deciding which props best represented each YouTuber. The actual photo shoot was so much fun to shoot and everyone was an absolute pleasure to work with.”
Linda worked with makeup artist Ashleigh Bunce on the photo series. “[Ashleigh] achieved the makeup and hair for this shoot and really helped me to transform our modern women into their gorgeous vintage selves!”
