The New Creator Showcase panel took place on Saturday at Summer in the City 2015. It featured creators including Jake Roper, Mark Douglas, and Hazel Hayes.
The panellists had each picked one of their favourite videos on YouTube by a new or lesser-known creator.
The panel took place in the Screening Room and was quite well attended, with an audience of around 60. Jake Roper, Michael Stevens, Hazel Hayes, Mark Douglas, and Todd Womack were the five panellists.
The first video shown was Jake’s choice, which was Put Me In Your Pocket by Nate Bernot. Jake said: “His videos are usually about nothing at all, but there’s something so curious about him that I love.”
After the first video there was a technology fault and the videos stopped playing. While they waited the panel questions from the audience. One audience member asked if Jake would trade shirts with him (the answer was no) and another asked what their favourite breakfast cereals are (Mark’s is Curiously Cinnamon).
Once the audio was back up the next video was Mark’s choice: Living With Jigsaw by Chris Capel. Mark said: “You don’t have to upload every single week, you can make really quality videos a couple of times a year if you want and they’ll get recognised if they’re really good.”
Michael chose A Corn Dog – Let’s Tape It, by Jonathan Harchick on his Let’s Tape It channel, which Michael said “wouldn’t exist anywhere else”. The last video was Suburban Scarface – How to Get the Woman by The Kloons.
After the videos, one of the audience members asked the panel for their advice on how to grow and get subscribers as a new YouTuber. Michael’s answer was to collaborate with other YouTubers. “It’s about collaboration and it’s consistently making stuff,” said Hazel. “There has to be the passion there, you have to be making stuff for the love of making it”.
