The ‘Cereal Time Live’ panel took place on Saturday at Summer in the City 2015. It featured co-hosts Jimmy Hill and Charlie McDonnell.
The panel, which took the chat show off the screen and into real life (with many more screams) featured fan favourites such as Feature Tombola and Cereal Time University. The panel was tailored to be completely a interactive experience so that the audience acted as the guest – which the full-to-capacity Panel Room A seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
The two opened the panel by giving a quick hello and shout-out to various people who had tweeted them. From there, the duo tried out a new game called ‘Snap That Face’ where audience members were invited to snap chat a “grotesque” picture of themselves to the official Cereal Time account and try to make Charlie and Jimmy laugh. Although there were some technical difficulties, which Charlie solved by holding his iPad up to his laptop that was then connected to the main screen, the game seemed to be a success. Before the panel, Jimmy had made crowns out of paper, sellotape, and a cutouts of the cards for the winners and distributed one to the person who pulled the most disgusting face.
After that, they moved onto Cereal Time University where the audience shouted out fun facts, and if neither Jimmy or Charlie knew them, the audience got a point. One boy shouted out that hummingbirds were the only birds who could fly backwards, which Jimmy challenged by asking “Is that confirmed? Has that been tested?”
A second fact was that a dog’s saliva is cleaner than a humans, which inspired Charlie to pipe in saying “My cat likes to lick my arm more than my face, but let’s not go into the intimate details of my life with my cat”.
Jimmy and Charlie then began to wrap up the panel by doing a collective Feature Tombola where various audience members were invited to come up to the stage to spin a tombola full of challenges. The challenges that were chosen included saying seven boys’ names (which proved to be surprisingly difficult for both), doing a handstand, their best impression of Pikachu, and admitting their terrible superpowers. Word to the wise, don’t call Jimmy “James”.
Although the panel ran short on time, there was a quick moment for a short Q&A. The first question asked if the pair were prepared for the apocalypse – which took them off guard, but both agreed they probably weren’t, seeing as Jimmy’s attack plan includes the use of the ‘Gnome of Lies’. A second attendee asked where inspiration for the show came from and Charlie admitted that the idea was given to him by Hank Green. He then brought it to Jimmy, and the two of them began developing it starting around January of this year.
Look out for Series Two of Cereal Time which starts on August 31st!
