The YouTuber will be judging entries in the #EnoughSaid Open Audition, a competition to win £5,000 and the chance to star in the next Tesco Mobile online ad campaign.
Tesco Mobile are looking for vloggers to fill 30seconds with “something wonderful, wacky or downright weird” in the competition. Entrants must upload a video, which can then receive votes from the public. The videos which receive the most votes by 5 November will make a shortlist, from which Jim Chapman will pick the winner.
TenEighty caught up with Jim and asked him why he got involved with the contest.
“I thought it was a really great opportunity because I often get people asking me how to start a YouTube channel and what to do,” he said. “I always say to them that the first step is to get your camera out and start filming, so this is great because its only 30 seconds.”
We also asked what he was looking for in a winning video.
“Originality and energy,” he answered. ” I’m not looking for high production values, but originality and personality. I feel very Simon Cowell-y doing this!”
A spokesperson for Tesco Mobile said: “In years gone by, the biggest stars were headhunted, groomed and trained by the Hollywood studios; now anyone with a webcam can become an icon.”
“From fashion to comedy skits, these self-made stars document their frolics and hobbies to an adoring fan-base. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting with their fans about everyday life. We can’t wait to work with Jim and find the next big online star who can fill our ads with a little bit of fun.”
A recent survey by Tesco Mobile found that almost 40% of 16-25 year olds said they would prefer to follow in the footsteps of professional YouTube vloggers than make a living from being a reality TV star (6%) or even from a career such as Law or Politics (34%). Tesco Mobile hope the #EnoughSaid Open Audition “will help one aspiring vlogger on the road to stardom”.
