In the past week there have been serious allegations of sexual harassment and rape made against prominent YouTubers.
As a news-led publication, TenEighty must report responsibly within the laws that govern journalism in the UK.
TenEighty has a duty to carefully consider the impact that rebroadcasting these allegations may have on the victims of crime, some of whom are under the age of consent; and the consequences of reporting defamatory allegations in the event that some are found to be untrue.
Our editors also have to consider whether, on balance, repeating allegations adds to the conversation, and whether TenEighty can afford to take the same risks as established mainstream media.
It has never been more important for the YouTube community to talk about sexual harassment and we are determined to keep the conversation going so the past is not repeated.
In April we published an article that discussed sexual abuse within the YouTube community. A lot of what was said in that article is still relevant now. We also touched on some of the issues at play when we interviewed Lindsay Atkin, who shared her insights from a parent’s point of view.
TenEighty remains committed to keeping the discussion going. We recognise the bravery of those who have come forward, and offer them our unconditional support.
