The last week of August has flown by! This makes us here at TenEighty sad. Now we’re entering the autumnal months, everyone’s got the post-summer blues (*sheds single tear*). However, we’ve got just the thing to perk you up.
No, it’s not a copious amount of coffee, our pick-me-up of choice is our constant feed of YouTube fixes! Here’s our pick of the best from the past week if you missed them. Some heart strings will be tugged, some eyes will be rolled and there’s even talk of a vlogging revolution! (vlogolution?) Let us know what you think and enjoy!
Mark Ludford – Coming Out
We had to lead off with this very brave Coming Out video from an up-and-coming superstar in the UK community, Mark Ludford. It is worth mentioning the scarcity of these kinds of videos from this side of the Atlantic, so Mark telling his story so that more people can realise that coming out as L, G, B, T, Q or any other letter need not be the scariest thing in the world is a big thing. And seeing as TenEighty is deeply rooted in the UK’s Gay Mafia we simply had to include Mark’s heart warming story.
If you would like some advice on LGBTQ+ issues like coming out, then please check out the Trevor Project (USA) or Stonewall (UK) for more information.
Jamie Paul & Hannah Witton – Women Are Different
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tJWZ1rTVHI
We’ve been loving the short videos that Mr. Face has been churning out recently. From in depth analysis of the psychology of a swimmer to the intricacies of YouTuber hair, he’s been mining some true gems.
In this collaboration with the ever-charming Hannah Witton we’re assaulted with hard filters and coarse words about the roles of men and women in the style of an address from George Orwell’s Big Brother. It’s kind of scared us a little in the TenEighty office. What if all we’ve been doing with our lives is conforming to gender binary norms?!
The pair’s gleeful giggles at the end bring us back into reality and remind us of Jamie and Hannah’s lighthearted demeanours. Jamie & Hannah for Prime Ministers 2015!
Flow – Insane Russian Cliff Dive | FAMJAM ’14
The global parkour network, Flow, has done an amazing job at cultivating some amazing content from the worldwide free-running, tricking and parkour communities. There’s an acknowledgement that the Russians are off their rockers when it comes to stunts, and this video diary includes some amazing base jumping off a waterfall, with one particular one involving a double flip into a plunge pool from 20m (fast-forward to 2:30 if you want to see that).
The Flow team are doing an amazing job of keeping this corner of YouTube’s community together, so kudos to them!
Kaitlinemmax – 3 Heatless & Quick Hairstyles for School
The end of August means back to school for those of you who are in education. For the rest of us it just means it becomes less socially acceptable to drink in the park. But everyone can learn from this tutorial from Kaitlin on how to get your hair looking its best if you’ve slept through your alarm and in a rush to get to school.
Even if you have little to no hair you can still watch and absorb her charisma. She’s got oodles of the stuff! This young lady with under 10k subs is definitely one to watch, mark our words.
Mawaan Rizwan – JUST TALK, INNIT
Mawaan from MalumTV is kind of a genius, so we’re really intrigued by what looks like a new concept from him where he puts a camera in YouTubers’ faces and tells them to “just talk”.
YouTubers may seem really adept at talking to camera, but with no prep, no script and no control over editing it’s apparently a lot harder than it looks. How would you react in this situation?
We think this might be a concept to watch, so keep your eyes peeled for more videos like this. It could be groundbreaking. That, or you’ll get to hear a lot of YouTubers say ‘um’.
“Excuse me, sir. So sorry to bother you but would I possibly be able to have some more? My YouTuber thirst is oh so insatiable!”
Well, alright then. Here’s a handful of more highlights from the UK YouTube community.
Bethan Mary Leadley (of musical fame) has been open in the past about her difficulties growing up. In this video she highlights the lasting effects of bullying on young people. An important topic since it’s good to know that you’re not alone, and that secondary school is only temporary.
Have you ever had a parent tell you to get off YouTube and pursue a real job? Well apparently that happens a lot to Emma Blackery in her comments, and here she muses on what she could possibly be if she were to quit YouTube and enter the ‘real world’. What do you think would most suit her?
And finally an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from Tom Law. He gets his abs out and our ovaries exploded. So enjoy the eye candy. BUT DON’T FORGET HE IS A TALENTED MUSICIAN TOO BECAUSE OBJECTIFICATION IS BAD!
