Every week TenEighty brings you a round-up of the best videos from the UK YouTube community. We whittle it down to five, so you get a digestible snapshot of what’s going on: this week we have a lot of food, boob jobs and videos that might make you think or get a bit emotional. So brace yourselves guys, you may experience a lot of conflicting sensations.
DOUG – BLACK BOTTOM CUPCAKES
Whether you’re ogling this video because of how delicious these black bottom cupcakes look, or because Doug is a tasty dish himself – especially that bit he has his top off (yeah, we caught that split second when you opened the oven Doug!) – you can’t deny there’s plenty to drool over here. Even if you’re not into baking or cooking tutorials, the editing on this video is quite fascinating itself, showing that Doug puts a lot of thought and time into even the simplest of videos. We still haven’t tried out the recipe ourselves (and we’re not too sure how to turn our oven on, tbh), but Doug makes it look easy enough for n00bs.
SARAH CLOSE – WEST COAST (LANA DEL REY COVER)
A stripped back, raw and powerful cover of Lana Del Rey’s West Coast, this rendition by Sarah Close has us convinced she’s bound for big things. Sarah has a natural and mesmerising voice that even Miss Del Rey should be jealous of. On top of this, there’s something about her that’s so easily likeable; the few seconds at the end where she gets distracted by her cat show us a little bit of her personality, and she seems very genuine. Her subscriber count has been rocketing over the past two months, so make sure you jump on board before she rockets out in space.
BEAUTY CRUSH – DID YOU GET A BOOB JOB?
Beauty guru Sammi Maria talks about getting breast implants in this video, in a very frank and honest way. A lot of people have been questioning her over it and commenting disapprovingly, but she’s not ashamed of her decision and wants to educate people about the issue, and hopefully help girls who may be struggling with their own body image. It’s a move away from her usual videos – styling, clothing and make-up – and a very bold move on her part. Boob jobs are a bit of a taboo subject here in the UK, as she says so herself, and it’s nice to see someone discussing it seriously rather than avoiding the topic.
MARK LUDFORD – WHEN I AM WITH YOU…
Last week Mark Ludford did his own Vlog Week: he does them annually around about the same time, but we’re pretty sure he didn’t manage seven days in ’12 or ’13. This year, however, he did, and not only that, every video was a treat in its own way, offering something different each time. It was really hard to pick JUST one, but When I Am With You, There’s No Place I’d Rather Be was the clear stand out. It’s short and simple, but very thoughtful – many of the comments say it moved them to tears. Mark’s really has a way with words, we reckon he chose them all very carefully, and as a result he’s got a lot of people considering what they want to do with their lives. Mark’s rawest talent is being artfully profound, and it shines through most when he keeps things sweet.
YOGSCAST KIM – 500K SUBSCRIBER SPECIAL!
Kim Richards hit 500,000 subscribers! And to celebrate she did something a little bit different from her usual game walk-through videos. She hosted a Q&A session over a Come Dine With Me style diner with Sjin, Duncan and Hannah, some of the other Yogscast alumni. If you’re not into gaming or gaming videos, don’t worry, this is a really good opportunity to get to know some of the faces behind Yogscast. And once you’re familiar with their personalities you might find yourself lost elsewhere on Kim’s channel. We put this one last because, yes, it’s quite a lengthy video, but it’s a pleasurable watch. If you’ve not got much time, at least catch the first five minutes, even if it’s just for Kim’s adorable laugh.
STILL BORED?
Then here’s some further reading for you. Totally check out Tanya Burr doing the chubby bunny challenge with Marcus Butler, tbh, we’re pretty surprised at how far she gets with it! Also, Jack Howard completely geeks out about Spider-Man 2, probably because he got to go to the premiere or something, and Ray Robert’s learns how to ride a bike, in an cinematic uplifting video that could secretly be a promo for the Boris Bikes.
Otherwise, that’s a wrap, did we miss anything important? Let us know in the comments below. And whilst you’re at it, make sure you at reply us on twitter throughout the week, and maybe you’ll see your videos pop up on next week!
